Take Your Students on a Trip Back in Time

Time travel stories are very popular with children today. Books like A Wrinkle in Time, A Traveler in Time, and The Last Musketeer are perennial favorites that allow children to use their imaginations and dream of what it would be like to live in a different time or place. So, just think of how excited your students will be when you tell them that they are about to take a journey back to an earlier time in Windham’s history when they visit Windham Historical Society’s Village School. This living history experience will also provide you an opportunity to meet some of the requirements of the learning results in your local and state history curriculum.

The Windham Historical Society will give your class a firsthand glimpse of what it was like to be a scholar in the late 19th century. The Village School is an authentic replica of an early New England one-room schoolhouse complete with a pot- bellied stove, wooden desks and benches, and a 36-star flag for students to salute using the original Pledge of Allegiance. McGuffey Readers are supplied for reading lessons, quill pens and ink are provided for penmanship practice, and slates and chalk are at each desk for students to do their math problems, or ciphering as it was called back in those days. Our teachers are dressed in period attire to enhance the learning experience and children are encouraged to do so as well. A visit to our schoolhouse will really trigger imagination and provide your students a unique few hours that they won’t soon forget. The Village School can accommodate 24 students per class.

The program is designed for third and fifth grade students and has a charge of $1.00 per student (teachers are free). The schoolhouse is open for classes in the months of September and October and April and May when the weather is most conducive to a good experience. If you would like more information on The Village School and how to arrange a visit for your class, please call the Society at 892-1433 or email either Paula Sparks (psparks46@roadrunner.com), Walter Lunt (wnlunt@yahoo.com), or Haley Pal (haleypal@aol.com). A schoolmarm or master will get back to you in a timely manner. We look forward to taking your class on an incredible journey into the world of 1898 and showing them how much fun can be had while learning about history.

Take a Trip Back in Time

Have you ever wondered what life was like in 1898, what a schoolhouse would have looked like, and what students would have been learning back then? If so, you may want to consider a visit to Windham Historical Society’s Village School, an authentic replica of an early New England one-room schoolhouse. The Windham Historical Society provides programs designed specifically for adult visitors, scout groups, and home schoolers in addition to our living history program for school children.

These programs are designed to be general in nature and won’t be customized for each specific group, however, we assure you that each experience will be rich in history and well worth your time. Your group will enjoy seeing our little schoolhouse that looks the way an old- fashioned schoolroom would have looked at the time. You will learn about what a day in a classroom of the 19 th century would have been like. A visit to our schoolhouse will trigger imagination and provide your organization a unique few hours that they won’t soon forget.
